    Description

Rare 1881 Photograph of the Jacob Van Buskirk House, 465 New Milford Avenue, Oradell, New Jersey. Photo (without mat) measures approximately 7" x 8 3/4".  Surrounding mat is chipped in corners and torn at bottom. The photo itself is in good condition. See photos for condition.
The Jacob Van Buskirk House is significant for its association with the development of the hamlet of New Milford in the 19th Century, and its association with the Van Buskirk family. The hamlet developed at the head of navigation of the Hackensack River. A mill was located here prior to the Revolutionary War. In 1837, Jacob Van Buskirk purchased the mill. From 1863-79, the house functioned as the local post office with Jacob Van Buskirk as postmaster.
Note in photograph a small boy on a wood bone breaker bicycle. Back of photograph indicates this photograph was taken on June 22, 1881 to celebrate the birthday of Leesie Van Buskirk.
